It’s time to switch off and indulge in the world of the glitterati, vivapets style. That means we’ll be taking a look at some celebrity canines, past and present. Scooby Doo and Muttley missed the cut (we just didn't get to know the real them), so just who did make the grade in the VivaPets doggy hall of fame?

Blue Peter dogs

How else could we start this list without giving our childhood television companions a mention? Whether you belong to the era of Petra , Shep, Bonnie or Meg, they were a huge part of our televisual experience growing up. They have a hugely symbolic role in the pet world – many a child’s first introduction to the concept of pets – and therefore deserve the top spot on our roster.

Wellard

Sadly, this Belgian Turveren no longer graces our screens nightly in EastEnders. But don’t worry; the sad death of one of the nation’s favourite pets was only down to the outstanding acting ability of Kyte, the dog who played him. Kyte is still very much with us, and comes from an acting dynasty – both his mother and grandmother have also played the role. Here at VivaPets, we just hope other shows have sniffed out his acting potential. A role in Holby City beckons…

Mick the Miller

Forget the achievements of Michael Phelps at the Beijing Olympics – it’s unlikely he can beat this legendary greyhound’s athletic pedigree. In only three years during the 1930’s, he helped to revolutionise the greyhound industry, winning the England Greyhound Derby twice, and at one stage emerging victorious in 19 consecutive races. A true sporting hero of yesteryear.

Greyfriars Bobby

It’s unlikely we even need to recount the tail of this loyal little dog, but it’s a story well worth repeating. This little Skye terrier became famous in 19th century Edinburgh for guarding his owner’s grave for 14 years until his own death. This quaint story is so popular it was adapted into a 2008 film, starring Sean Pertwee and Gina McKee. Dogs eh? They just aren’t as loyal as they used to be…

Bobbie the Wonder Dog

Another dog who registers in the history books for similar reasons of willpower to Greyfriars Bobby. This Bobbie became a legend in America  due to his his extraordinary determination to return home to the family he got separated from on a holiday. Remarkably, Bobbie covered 2,800 miles of terrain from Indiana to Oregon in his quest to reunite with his owners. His feat saw him become a national celebrity in 1920’s America , with Bobbie receiving hundreds of letters and even receiving keys to cities.

Nipper

A dog that has transcended both the worlds of art and business, Nipper is famous as the dog that served as the model for a famous painting by Francis Barraud entitled ‘His Master’s Voice’. However, it’s likely you’ll most recognise him as the mascot of HMV (ever wondered what that name might stand for?), bringing this painting to a whole new generation when the company surged in popularity in the mid-nineties.

Tinkerbell

Arguably the world’s most pampered pooch, this Chihuahua has the unique, erm, honour of having Paris Hilton as an owner. Tinkerbell’s certainly caught the fame bug, featuring in all five seasons of reality show The Simple Life and accompanying the socialite at numerous red carpet events. Smile for the camera…

Barney

He’s probably the most powerful canine on the planet, and his title of ‘First Dog’ should give you some indication as to the owner of this Scottish terrier. Yes, as George W Bush’s prized pooch, Barney is free to roam the corridors of power. Let’s just hope he doesn’t have his paw on the nuclear button.
