History [ edit ]

One of the most ancient breeds, the Afghan Hound was only discovered by the Occident in the 19th century. Isolated between the mountains in Afghanistan, the population didn´t wanted to export the Afghan Hound across borders and the breed was kept pure for a longtime. When it first reached Europe, at the turn of the 20th century, the Afghan Hound had diverse characteristics that were standardize based in the exemplar “Zardin”. A couple decades later, the breed was internationally recognized.

In Afghanistan this sight hound is used not only to hunt foxes, deer and gazelles and but also to guard sheep and cattle.

In Europe, the Afghan Hound was valued by its elegance, turning him into the pet of the upper-classes. Eventually his ability to run was discovered and the Afghan Hound jumped from the shows to the lure coursing arena.

Temperament [ edit ]

This dog fit for kings as a very happy disposition, yet he is independent and aloof. It will establish bonds with the owner but it has more of a cat personality. They don´t like strangers and make a fairly good guard and watchdog.

Training an Afghan Hound can be a bit difficult, since he´s not interested in repeating the same commands over and over again and is quite stubborn.

These are gentle pets, calm and assured of themselves, who won´t hover you about cuddles.

This dog needs his share of exercise; they are big and need big places to exercise themselves, al least a good free run per day. Afghan Houds are not suited for apartment life.

This hound can cope well with extreme temperatures, since of all the sight hounds he is the one with the best coat protection. In fact, his hunter instincts are still as acute as they were when they were first discovered by the Europeans, making him a great hunter.

General appearance [ edit ]

His long, slender body and face and long coat give him the elegance and presence of an aristocratic dog. This giant dog can reach 74 cm height but it doens´t weights more than 27 kg.

Being a Middle Eastern breed, there are some exotics traits to this breed: the long topnot and the colors, usually browns, gold and grays, but any color will do.

The gait of the Afghan Hound is probably one of his best features: spring, elasticity and power combined with flowing hair to smooth the picture, gives this dog a very stylish gallop or trot.
