History [ edit ]

The American Curl Cat is a very recent breed, the discovery of the first cat dating back to June, 1981, in Lakewood, California. The most unique attribute of this breed is its distinctly curled ears. The discovery is due to a young couple (Grace and Joe Ruga) who found two stray female cats at their doorstep which ears strangely curled upward and backward. One of the cats was accidentally injured and ran away but the other returned and was reared by the Rugas. The cat was named “Shulamith” an Hebrew word that translates "black but comely". Shulamith gave birth to a litter of four kittens. Out of the four kittens, two had the same curly ears as their mother. A geneticist who studied the problem of the ear-curling concluded that it was due to a spontaneous mutation, a serendipitous genetic accident, and that the gene responsible for the trait was autosomal dominant. This means that any cat with even one copy of the gene will display the genetic trait. This genetic mutation has no deformities attached to it. A beeding programme was subsequently established, according to which Curls were bred only to other Curls or to their straight-ear relatives to perpetuate the breed standard. 25 years after the fortunate discovery all true American Curls must trace their pedigree back to Shulamith, the foundation matriarch. American Curl kittens are born with ears that look completely normal, their ears beginning to curl when the kittens are about ten days old. It takes about four months for the ears to develop their final shape.

General Appearance [ edit ]

The American Curl Cat is a medium-sized, perky, sweet and very elegant breed, with a dynamic and remarkable appearance having as its distinctive feature outward-curled ears that are unique in the cat world and give the animal  a “happily-surprised” expression. Curls can be longhaired or shorthaired but the longhaired are prevalent. The body is medium-sized, rectangular, well balanced, moderately muscled, but slender rather than massive with a medium deep chest and flank. The legs are straight, medium-boned, medium in length and proportional to body with medium and rounded feed. The head is moderately longer than wide, forming a modified wedge without flat planes. In profile the nose is moderately longer than wide and is straight. The rounded muzzle has a gentle transition and no pronounced whisker break. The chin is firm, in line with the nose and the upper lip. The expressive eyes are moderately large in size, walnut-shaped and set on a slight angle. Except for pointed cats, there is no relation betweem coat colour and eye colour, which is clear and brilliant. The flexible and round-tipped ears are moderately large, wide at base and open, curving back in smooth arc when viewed from front and rear and with furnishings. They are placed erect and set equally on top and side of head. The tail is flexible, equal to body in length, wide at base and tapering gracefully at the tip. The coat can be both longhaired and shorthaired with a minimal undercoat. Both varieties have soft, silky, laying flat coats, but the longhaired has a beautiful plumed tail. Curls shed little and come in a huge variety of colors.

Temperament [ edit ]

The American Curl Cat is an even-tempered, quiet, sweet-natured and adaptable breed. They are intelligent, alert and active. While being very people-oriented, Curls are known for their remarkable ability to amuse themselves, being perfectly happy if they are left alone for long hours, but greeting theirs owners with great delight, bumping heads, when the family comes home. They are a little bit inactive, and can spend long hours just laying in the sun , which makes them perfect as an apartament pet. This breed adjusts easily to almost any household and gets along well with other animals. Curls are not very loquacious but they know how to call their owners’ attention when they need something. They are very playful, keeping their kitten-like behavior through their adult lives, which makes them terrific playmates for the children and a wonderful pet for people who love kittens.
