History [ edit ]

The American Shorthair Cat, which was called the Domestic Shorthair until 1960’s, originated from the European Shorthair cat. Its ancestors were probably cats brought into North America by the first settlers. In fact there is written evidence that the "Mayflower" carried several cats to hunt the ship's rats. Those cats had to adjust to the more dangerous life and the rougher weather conditions of their new country, and they just did so by developing characteristics distintive from those of the European Shorthair cats, like growing bigger and acquiring a heavier and coarser coat which protected them from the cold winters. Early in the 20th century breeders successfully commenced the selective breeding of the American Shorthair cat with a view to preserving its native quality. Today, the American Shorthair cat is a pedigreed breed in that it can consistently produce kittens of the same physical conformation, coat quality, and temperament while non-pedigreed cats cannot. Due to their good looks and loving nature, coupled with their rat-catching skills, American Shorthairs consistently rank as one of the ten most popular breeds of cat.

Temperament [ edit ]

The American Shorthair Cat is an easy-going, mild-mannered and affectionate cat, with a quiet disposition. American Shorthair cats are not vocal, generally opening their mouths to meow but their meows are silent; they communicate in sweet squeaks and chirps. This breed is moderately active; nonotheless it is undoubtedely, a redoubtable hunter of mice and other small rodents, a real cat's cat. These cats are amiable with children and pets, as long as they are not mishandled. They are what’s called "four-on-the-floor cats", which means that they prefer to be on the floor than being carried around in someones arms. However they love curling up on the bed or the sofa and are an ideal breed for apartment living.
