History [ edit ]

Although this is a very old breed, dating to the late 16th century, it is rarely known outside of France! It is a cousin of the Briard, and both being French livestock gaurdians. There was no distinction between the two breeds until the 19th Century, when the short haired variety was renamed the Beauceron and the Long haired variety remained the Briard. After the French Revolution, the breeds were used as hearding dogs rather than gaurdians. They have recently gained popularity in other areas of Europe, as well as North America!
