The donkey has always been a working animal. Strong and resistant, enduring weather and scarce food, the donkey was favored by those with low resources. The donkey has played an important role in agriculture and transportation of supplies. However with the industrial revolution, the machines have taken over that role and left the donkey with little to no use. Its popularity started to fall and some breeds in developed countries face extinction.
However, in an effort to revive the breeds, the donkey has been used as a tourists’ attraction. Some sanctuaries were also created to retired donkeys. In the EUA, the donkey is quite popular simply as a pet.

Donkeys are animals with varied size, which can go from 90 to 160 cm, depending on the breed.
The donkey’s ears are probably its most popular feature. They are bigger than the horses’ ears, which allow them to work as a cooling system and also enable the donkey to hear distant sounds.
