History [ edit ]

The Fancy rat was bred from unusually coloured Norwegian, or Brown, rats caught by rat-catchers in the late 19th century. The rat fancy was formally launched in 1901, when Mary Douglas won Best in Show in an Ayelsbury Fancy Mouse show. Since then, the breeding of pet rats has increased dramatically in popularity all over the world.

Temperament [ edit ]

Rats are fun and inquisitive pets who can learn many tricks. The temperament varies with gender: males are usually quite laid back and calm once adults. Babies are rather more active, as well as females, who would much rather play hide and seek on your bed.

General Appearance [ edit ]

The fancy rat has a small body with hairless/semi-hairless ears, nose, feet and tail. The tail is semi-prehensile and normally more or less the length of the body, and has small scales all over evenly. The paws are monkey-like and have 4 fingers and a small thumb on the front 2, and 5 toes on the back. They have round, watery eyes which are coloured black, red, ruby (dark red) or odd-eyed.

They have large incisors which grow constantly, which are kept short by grinding the teeth. If there is a problem and the rat cannot grind its teeth, the incisors will grow and prevent the rat from eating comfortably.

The fancy rat has different fur types, including short/medium straight fur, wavy fur ('rex'), hairless, and "double rex" (wavy fur that the animal looses during moult). Fancy rats also have other body variations, like ear type- standard (on the top of the head) and dumbo (ears positioned on the side of the head). Tailless rats are also seen occasionally.
