History [ edit ]

The Labrador Retriever originated in Newfoundland, Canada (probably a crossing between the extinct St John´s Water Dog and the Newfoundland Dog) where it was used to haul the fisherman´s nets from the icy waters to shore. To differentiate this breed from the Newfoundland Dog the Earl of Malmesbury named it Labrador. Other dog experts suggest that the name derives from the Spanish or Portuguese word for farmworkers, "labradores", and also that the breed descended from the Portuguese herddog Castro Laboreiro to which Labradors bear a striking resemblance. Labradors are presently one of the most popular breeds in the world.Their followers affectionately give them the short name of Lab. They are a well-balanced and remarkably versatile breed, keen learners and easily adaptable to a wide range of functions. Together with the Golden Retriever they rank top in assistance to disabled. They also excel in drug detection and in obedience and field trial competitions.

General Appearance [ edit ]

The Labrador Retriever is medium-sized, energetic and outgoing dog, stockily built, and well balanced, with a short, dense, and water-resistant coat. The body is square or slightly longer than tall with well sprung ribs tapering to a moderately wide chest to allow unrestricted forelimb movement. The back is strong and the topline is level from the withers to the croup when the animal is standing or moving. The Loin is short, wide and strong, showing flexibility for athletic endeavour and with little or no tuck-up in a mature dog.The clean-cut, broad head, stands on a powerful neck and is proportionate to the size of the dog. The skull is moderately broad with a pronounced stop. The muzzle is fairly wide, and slightly deeper and wider at the stop than at the tip. The nose  has large and open nostrils. The eyes are medium sized and somewhat triangular in appearance,  set well apart, and neither protruding nor deep set.  They are chestnut or hazel in colour and have an express intelligence, character and good temperament. The ears, triangular in shape and medium-sized, are set rather far back and hang moderately close to the head. When the dog is alert, the ears are drawn up and forward. The "otter" tail is a hallmark of this breed. Very thick and muscular near the body and tapering to the tip, it is covered with the same thick, dense coat as the body. The tail hangs down naturally when the dog is relaxed or levels with the back (or with a slight upward curve) when the animal is alert or moving. The short, dense, water-repellent double coat is neither coarse nor silky, giving a fairly hard feeling to the hand. Labradors come in various colours, from solid black to any solid shade of yellow or any solid shade of chocolate.

Temperament [ edit ]

The Labrador Retriever is exceptionally friendly, highly intelligent, loyal, willing, and good natured. They are eager to please and crave for human attention. They have a stable temperament, are not excessively territorialist and are totally non-aggressive towards man or other animals which makes them splendid house dogs.  They love to play, especially in water, being superb companions to children especially because they do not take offence at rough playing or at anything else for that matter. It is an easily trainable dog, multi-talented, excelling in tracking, retrieving, watchdogging, search and rescue, police work, mine-detection, assistance to disabled, sledding, carting, agility, and competitive obedience. Because of their strong attachment to their human family they can become destructive if left alone for a long period pof time.
