History [ edit ]

The Portuguese Shepherd Dog is descendent from the Pyrenean Sheepdog. In the beginning of the tweentieth century, the Count of Castro Guimarães imported Briard Sheepdog dogs, and crossed them with the mountain dog to improve the breed.

The Serra de Aires Mountain Dog, as it is also called, is used as a shepherd in the Southern plains of Portugal. It was on the verge of extinction around 1970s but devoted breeders brought him back to life. He is favoured in the Alentejo were his skills of keeping the flock together and bringing the strays are much appreciated. The Portuguese Sheepdog is now owed by middle class that has him as a good companion dog.
