The Amazon Parrots are a well-known group of birds, kept as pets since the sixteenth century, when sailors found the New World. But long before that, the Greeks already called them “talking birds”. Housing [ edit ]

Sturdiness is what you should look for in an Amazon Parrot’s aviary, since they like to chew on wood and may bite the cage. As for measurements, the cage of these birds should as big as it can get because they are very active birds that like to exercise and they are prone to put on some weight. A cage with 100 to 150 cm high and 60 x 100 cm of space floor is good enough for the Amazon Parrots. If kept outside, they should have a shelter.

Amazons Parrots like to play, especially with their feet. So make sure you accessorize the cage with sturdy toys that can be handled with their toes. Add some destructible toys as well because the Amazon Parrots like to gnaw on wood in the wild and they have the need to tear things apart.

Temperament [ edit ]

These birds enjoy company and can get frustrated or even aggressive if neglected. As “flock” birds, it´s advisable to have two if you think you can´t get him enough attention. They aren’t for the inexperienced owner, since they require patient and gentle dominance. During mating time they may get aggressive.

The Amazon Parrots have exceptional vocal abilities. They are able to mimic the human voice, but beware of what you teach him, because he will be saying it throughout his long life. What you think it´s funny now may not be as cute four decades later. Don´t buy an Amazon Parrot because of this trait, since some specimens are not that inclined to “speak”.

These birds don´t tend to vocalize often, usually one or two times a day, at sunrise and sunset, but when they do, they do it loud and their “screams” can be clearly heard by neighbors. This is not the ideal bird for apartment owners. The Amazons that are kept with other birds of their kind are generally louder.

The Amazon Parrots are very affectionate birds that will bond with the owner. They are very playful and can amuse themselves if given appropriate toys.
