History [ edit ]

Descending from the Europeans hounds, mostly English and French, the American Hound has some characteristics of his own: his lighter and taller. His story his more ancient that the country that gave him his name. The Europeans hounds were brought to America in the mid seventeenth century by the settlers, who loved a really good hunt, and did all they could to create a hound adjusted to the country characteristics.

The American Hound was usually used in hunts, especially in chases, since he’s very fast. But he is able to track, chase and kill a fox by himself. Eventually, he became very popular among the American upper-class, as a perfect hunting companion.

General appearance [ edit ]

The size of the American Hound should not be under 53 or over 64 cm. This dog is very athletic, with sleek lines, deep chest and long legs with a predominant muzzle.

The coat is hard and close and of medium length. When it comes to color everything is admitted, although being the tri-color with a saddle the most common one.

The tail of this hound is set moderately high, but not turned forward over the back; with slight curve; with very slight brush.

Temperament [ edit ]

These are very active dogs, they never get tired from running, and they will shred everything that comes his way. Nevertheless they are very gentle and sensitive dogs, that don’t need a very strong socialization, since they are use to hunt in packs. They are exceptional with children and other dogs, however another breed’s pet can be seen by him as a fox! Their reaction to strangers can vary, although by nature they are very affable.

Since they’re scent hounds, they smell everything and can very well take off unexpectedly to pursue a trail.

The ideal solution for this dog is a house with a large secure fenced yard so that they can have green space to explore. It´s not recommended that they live in an apartment.
