History [ edit ]

As his name states, the American Staffordshire Terrier had his origin in the USA, but his ancestors came from Staffordshire, England. His closest cousin is the Staffordshire Bullterrier. Their ancestors were the Bulldog and the English Terrier. These two breeds were combined with intention of creating a dog with the strength of the Bulldog and the agility of the Terrier. However the American Staffordshire Terrier is heavier andh as a more powerful head, then his British relative. These dogs were used in bull baiting and fights.

The American Staffordshire Terrier is commonly associated with the American Pit Bull Terrier, although they are two different breeds that are now starting to be recognized by the international organizations as such.

General appearance [ edit ]

Stocky and muscular, the American Staffordshire Terrier, is also very agile and extremely strong for his size. His height varies between 43 and 48 cm and his weight should never be under 18 kg or above 23 kg.

The coat is short, close, stiff to the touch, and glossy.

The color for these dogs is not defined, since they go well in any of the existing ones, however more than 80 per cent white, black and tan, and liver are not encouraged by the standard.

They have a medium sized head, the skull is wide and the muscles on their cheeks are well pronounced.

Small ears are set high on the head and can be cropped. Dark, round eyes are set deep in the skull and far apart. The front legs should be straight, large or round bones.

His tail seems short in comparison to his size, it´s of low set and tapers to a fine point.

Temperament [ edit ]

Much has been discussed about the temperament of the American Staffordshire Terrier. Bounded to a stigma of violence, the American Staffordshire Terrier is actually a very gentle and loving dog towards people. He is extremely loyal and very obedient, courageous and intelligent guard dog. When he feels threatened or feels that his owner is threatened he will fight to the death to protect himself and those he respects.

Many American Staffordshire Terriers are aggressive toward dogs and other pets, though this can be mitigated through obedience training and socialization.

This is a very active breed that loves doing a lot of exercise outside.

Health [ edit ]

This dog´s breed can life up to 9 or 15 years. Their health main concerns are hip dysplasia, hereditary cataracts and congenital heart disease.

The American Straffordshire Terrier only needs a minimal grooming of his coat. Dry shampoo or bathe should only be given only when necessary.

This dog must be trained and socialized starting at a very young age. He shouldn’t  be encouraged to be dominating.
