History [ edit ]

The American Water Spaniel is a American breed that was very popular already in the 1800s. It developed in the Wisconsin from land spaniels and retrievers. The more likely to be its ancestors are the Curly-coated Retriever, the Irish Water Spaniel and the Field Spaniel.

The American Water Spaniel is a scent hound very appreciated by its hunting skills: he is perfect for retrieving game in the water but he also does it well on land. His keen nose and non stop energy make him the perfect hunting companion.

The breed was only recognized by the AKC in 1940. The American Water Spaniel has never been a very popular breed and despite being an American breed registered animals in the United States of America range to two to three hundreds. However, since he is essentially a hunting dog, many owners/hunters may not bother to register them.

General appearance [ edit ]

The American Water Spaniel is a medium-sized dog, between the retrievers and the land spaniels. The proportion is very important in this breed, being a little longer than taller.

The head is broad and proportional, the eyes are light brown to hazel – yellow eyes aren´t allowed - and the nose is dark or even black. The tail is curved and is carried at the level of the back.

His webbed feet make him perfectly adapted to hunting in the water. His water-proof coat is a plus in these conditions, to this active and muscular dog. The hair can be closely curled or wavy (marcel). The coat can be solid liver, brown or dark chocolate, but white on toes and chest admissible.

Temperament [ edit ]

The American Water Spaniel is an energetic breed with very keen hunting instincts and love for the water. Eagerness to learn and high intelligence make this breed very trainable. Socialization should start at early age, so that his sensitive nature doesn´t turn him into a too shy or aggressive dog.

These dogs appreciate company but they can be quite independent when they feel like it. However, when they want to play, they can be exuberant and enthusiastic.

They make good watchdogs due to their tendency to bark and natural suspicion of strangers. Some may drool.

They get along with other pets and dogs, if socialized with them since early age, but he isn´t fond of strange animals.

These animals need a lot of exercise and should be unleashed in safe areas. They can live in an apartment if properly exercised, but the best is to have a yard for them to explore. They like having a job, but they make an excellent pet as well.
