History [ edit ]

Canaries were discovered by Spanish sailors in the fifteenth century during the exploration journeys to find new lands. Later, fascinated by their singing, they brought some canaries home with them and made them house pets.
During the Victorian period, canaries grew in popularity and good taste dictated every house should have one.

Soon, the canary was saving the life of miners that used them as warning signals for methane or carbon monoxide. Many miners died by breathing these poisonous gases. Then they realized that due to the Canaries high metabolism these could be used as an alert for the presence of poisonous gases. The miners started to take canaries to the mines and when they stopped singing or when they died, they knew their lives were in danger and they would return to the surface.

Temperament [ edit ]

Canaries take one to two years to fully mature. Male canaries are great singers, while females just make a few sounds. The males sing to mark their territory and to seduce the female. They start to sing as the sun rises. They are gregarious birds that will do ok with other species, however the males don´t do well with other males. It´s preferable to keep families together.

General appearance [ edit ]

There are innumerous color combinations for these little fellows. Since canaries are kept in captivity, more than 300 years ago, they were bred for their singing skills, and more recently, breeders seem to be trying to improve their colors. Because of this, nowadays it’s somewhat established two types of canaries: the singing type and the color type. There are proximally one hundred varieties of canaries.

Housing [ edit ]

Canaries are very active birds that like to fly in their cages, so make sure you have enough room for them to fly back and forward. These little birds are actually quite destructive if they get frustrated. To prevent this you can accessorize the aviary with toys so they can distract themselves. For males, don´t use mirrors because they will perceive it has a threat. With their characteristic feet – three toes forward and one backwards - canaries need thick wood perches for them to hold on to.
