History [ edit ]

Lady Gouldian Finch is an unusual name for a bird breed but is has sentimental reasons. The name Lady Gouldian was given to these Finches by John Gould in memory of his late wife.

Although very popular in aviaries, due to their bright colors, during the past century, Gouldians have decreased in numbers and are now classified endangered in the wild. Their habitat has been progressively destroyed by fires and human hand. In the wild they stay away from people, but their bright colors makes them an easy prey for hunters.

General Appearance [ edit ]

The male Goulds are colorful birds with bright purple on the chest, green on the back and vivid yellow underpants. A color mutation occurs in male Goulds when they are ready to nest: their bill’s tip turns red. The female´s colors aren´t as noticeable as the male, since they are more muted.

There are three color variations of the Gouldian Finch. The difference between these Finches lies only in the head color, which can be red, black (the most common one) or yellow (more orange than yellow, it is the rarest of the three).

The young birds are mostly grey with green wings, back and tail.

A quality mix of Finch food with niger seeds and millet is a good diet for these birds. They also appreciate boiled eggs and sprouted seeds.
