History [ edit ]

The Komondor is an ancient breed that has Hungary as its homeland. His ancestry his uncertain, but it´s known that they were used as sheep guardians for centuries. It´s likely they were brought to Hungary from the Siberian region by the Magyar tribe but there´s still those who believe that they were brought by Sumerians from the Middle East area.

The Komondor was originally a sheep guardian, protecting the flocks from wolfs, coyotes and other predators, even thieves. Nowadays they are still used to livestock guarding. Despite being good companion dogs, they aren´t suited to the cities, being the country their natural environment.

The long corded coat that covers his body allows him to blend in with the sheep so that his effectiveness in protecting them enlarges by the surprise factor when the enemy attacks.

General appearance [ edit ]

Physically, what sets this dog apart from all the others is his long and corded coat that covers his entire body. This white long cords cover the eyes right up to his black nose, leaving a little bit of red tongue to see when the dog´s mouth is open.

But this dog is very strong with lots of muscle and very tall, reaching up to 90 cm and weighting from 36 to 61 kg.

The tail is a continuation of the rump line that maintains the dreadlock appearance.

It has been described as courageous with dignity. Has a guard dog he is very protective of its family, and becomes very attached to them.

They need a good socialization, preferably starting at an early age.

Health [ edit ]

Komondors are a healthy breed with few genetically problems. The main concern is this breed is, as in many large breeds, the hip dysplasia.

The coat requires constant attention, it needs a lot of bathing and it takes a long time to dry, but the shedding is surprisingly minimal.
