History [ edit ]

The Miniature Pinscher is part of the larger German Pinscher family, which contained both large and small varieties of breeds, and it´s not, as it is commonly thought, a miniature version of the Doberman. In fact, this one only appears a couple of centuries later. It´s also defended by some German researchers that there´s some Dachshund and Italian Greyhound blood in this small animal.

The word "Pinscher" means "terrier" in German and he is also known in it´s country of origin as the “Zwergpinscher”.

This breed was one of the first’s rat predator ones, but nowadays, despite their maintenance of those instincts, they are used as companion dogs.

General appearance [ edit ]

The Miniature Pinscher is a structurally well balanced, compact and muscular dog. It´s a small breed, no taller then 30 cm. Weighting 2 to 5 Kg, the Min Pin, as it is also called, is sturdy and short-coupled.

This sleek dog has a smooth coat that can be red, chocolate or black and tan. The eyes are dark. The tail is of high setting, held erect and usually docked in proportion to size of dog, which in some countries is now considered illegal.

The ears are a very characteristic feature of this breed. They are set high, standing erect from base to tip, and may be cropped or uncropped.

Temperament [ edit ]

No dog is too big for the Miniature Pinscher of 30 cm. Brave and overly courageous they have very little tolerance to other animals and usually are them who start the fight!

They like to bark, so they are very good watchdogs, loyal to their family, always alert and never lacking in energy. They aren’t the kind of dog who likes to be on the lap too much, but despite that, they are very friendly with humans.

They live well in an apartment as long as they have their daily walk.

Intelligent, and eager to please, these dogs are easy to train. Nonetheless, they need a good socialization.

Health [ edit ]

The Min Pin is a very healthy breed that doens´t have any major concerns. Occasionally heart defects, patellar luxation, cervical dry disk, Legg-Perthes, hypothyroidism and mucopolysacharidosis may occur.
Grooming is minimal, as the smooth, short-haired coat requires little attention.

The bath should only be given when strictly necessary, and the water should be warm, since his coat isn´t a good protection from the cold.

Due to their hunting instincts, the Min Pin has a tendency to explore small objects by biting them, so particularly attention must be paid so that he doesn’t harm himself with pointy object and such alike.

These dogs are also prone to gaining weight, so their diet should be monitored to prevent obesity.
