History [ edit ]

As old as civilization, Saluki may be the oldest domesticated known breed. It is impossible to track with certainty such an ancient breed, but records of the Saluki appear scarce in time, some millenniums before the birth of Christ. Some say that carvings from the Sumerian period are Saluki dogs, more certain seems to be that the Egyptians venerated this breed and that Salukis were mummified and berried in tombs, just like the Egyptians did with Pharaohs. In a carving dating 2100 b.C. are supposedly two Salukis with Tutankhamen.

To the Muslims, dogs are unclean and do not enter their houses. However, Salukis are welcomed inside. They are considered a sacred gift from their God and can´t be sold, only given as a special gesture. Since the Salukis couldn´t be bred with other breeds, Salukis have maintained their appearance over the ages.

This large sight hounds was used to hunt gazelles and it is thought that they were carried in a camel to the hunt locations so they didn´t burned their feet in the hot sand.

Today, Salukis are mainly companion dogs, although they have also been used as hare coursings.

Temperament [ edit ]

A one person’s dog, the Saluki tends to choose his owner amongst the family.

The Saluki is a reserved dog, very affectionate with it´s family, but aloof with strangers. They are good with older children, since properly socialized.

They are hounds and don´t get along with other small animals, due to their hunting instincts.

Calm and veru intelligent, Salukis are good companion dogs. They don´t do well in an apartment.

General appearance [ edit ]

Long and narrow almost to the point of looking underweighted, the Saluki is a large dog of 58 to 71 cm and only 14 to 25 Kg.

Elegant, with a smooth and silky coat, the Saluki can be found in many colors: White, cream, fawn, golden, red, grizzle and tan, tricolor (white, black and tan) and black and tan.

With a dignified head and bright far seeing eyes, grace and symmetry are very specific traits of this breed.

The long legs give the Saluki speed and the feathering on the ears and tail, give him the elegance.
