History [ edit ]

This breed is the most popular amongst the Terrier. Created to hunt foxes, it is thought to be the result of crosses between the Old English Terrier, smooth coated Black and Tan terriers of England, Bull Terriers, Greyhounds and Beagles. The Wire Fox Terrier was primarily use to fox flushing, small-mammal killing and rabbit hunting.

Very similar to the Smooth Fox Terrier, the most ancient one, they vary in the type of coat and also in the roles they played in hunting. Both varieties started to be standardized around 1875. Until then, all dogs used in fox hunting were called Fox Terrier. Now, the wire Fox Terrier is the most popular of them all, and it´s appreciated as a companion dog.

General appearance [ edit ]

The Terrier should be alert, and react to the slightest provocation. On contrary of most dogs, his hair should be messy with a tendency to twist and of wiry texture. The undercoat is of finer and softer hair.

In this breed the white should predominate with bits of black and tan.

The eyes are dark and circular, with a keen and lively expression. The chest should be deep but not too broad, the shoulders long and sloping.

Temperament [ edit ]

The Terriers are cheerful, energetic and inquisitive. They are playful but they are generally not for families with other dogs or pets. They can be protective, and they usually don´t get along with other pets, unless they are socialized with them since yearly age.

They make good watchdogs and have a tendency to bark.

They love to dig, so make sure your yard is well fenced.

Health [ edit ]

Wire Fox Terriers are generally strong and healthy dogs. Their life span is 12 to 14 years, but it is not unusual for them to live longer. Nonetheless, owners must beware of deafness, which is the most common disease. Epilepsy, skin problems, lens luxation and Legg-Perthes can also occur.

The hair should be brushed regularly. Brushing will help maintain a clean and healthy coat.
